His Translation of Vert-Vert was first printed separately, with some pomp, in 4to. in 1759; and afterwards in Dilly's Repository, a Collection of Fugitive Pieces (4 vol 12mo. London 1783. 2d. Ed:) where it stands the first Article. He has used the Octosyllabic verse with irregular rhyme, like the Original. It is not in his Collected Works. (Bron: M. Some other of his lesser pieces were published about this time; and in 1759 the
translation of Gresset's Ver Vert, a mock heroic poem, in four cantos. In 1764 all
these, with the exception of the Ver Vert and The Estimate of Life, which are now
added, were published in one volume by Dodsley, whom he allowed to take that liberty,
and who informs us, that they were originally written for the author's amusement, and.
afterwards published for the bookseller's profit.

Een Duitse Gresset

De Duitse auteur Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim (1719-1803), die bevriend was met Ver-Vert-vertaler J.N. Götz (1721-1781), schreef op 16-11-1767 aan zijn protégé Johann Georg Jacobi (1740-1814) dat hij hem - Jacobi - beschouwde als de 'Duitse Gresset'.

Jacobi maakte naam als dichter van liefdes- en drinkliederen in de trant van de oud-Griekse auteur Anacreon. Later werd hij zeer populair, met name ook bij vrouwen, als hoogleraar Schone Kunsten en Wetenschappen in Freiburg. Literaire grootheden als Klopstock, Goethe en Herder sloegen hem niet hoog aan, maar vele van zijn liederen zijn getoonzet door Schubert, Haydn en Mendelssohn.

1760 Papperle: Duitse bewerking in proza
Deze anoniem gepubliceerde versie is het werk van de Duitse geestelijke, vertaler en anacreontisch dichter Johann Nikolaus Götz (1721-1781), die bevriend was met J.W.L. Gleim (1719-1803; zie 1767). Götz verdiende aanvankelijk de kost als huisleraar. In 1747-1748 maakt hij als aalmoezenier een veldtocht naar Vlaanderen en Brabant mee, waar hij reisjes naar Nederland aan vastknoopte. Daarna vervulde hij diverse functies in de lutherse kerk. Op zijn oude dag trok hij zich terug in een dorpje in Rheinland-Pfalz, wat hem de bijnaam 'Winterburgse nachtegaal' opleverde. Götz' dichtkunst geldt als sierlijk en soms zelfs frivool. Vooraanstaande schrijvers roemden hem, en vele van zijn gedichten zijn getoonzet.

Van Götz' Ver-Vert-vertaling zouden ook edities uit 1750 en/of 1752 bestaan, maar dat is onzeker. Wel verscheen in 1772 een herdruk.

J.N. Götz

Een exemplaar van Götz' Papperle is via de collectie erotica van de Beierse ambtenaar Franz von Krenner in 1819 in de 'gifkast' (Enfer) van de Beierse Staatsbibliotheek beland, en daar pas in de jaren zestig van de 20ste eeuw uit verlost.

It had first appeared in English in 1759, translated by John Gilbert Cooper. Italiaanse vertaling

In 1803 verscheen bij de vermaarde uitgeverij Bodoni in Parma een Italiaanse vertaling van Ver-Vert van de hand van Lodovico Antonio Vincenzi (Modena 1750-1822). Vincenzi heeft ook werken van Ovidius, Vergilius en Horatius vertaald, en hij heeft gedichten en een operalibretto op zijn naam. De vertaling van Ver-Vert – ‘een van de sierlijkste en vermaardste dichtwerkjes die ooit uit een Franse pen zijn gevloeid’ – is opgedragen aan ‘Mevrouw Murat geboren Bonaparte’. Dit was Caroline Bonaparte (1782-1839), de jongste zus van Napoleon. Zij verbleef in 1802-1803 afwisselend in Parijs en Milaan. Haar man Joachim Murat was in die tijd opperbevelhebber van de strijdkrachten van de Italiaanse Republiek, een Franse vazalstaat in Noord-Italië.
Om zo dicht mogelijk bij het origineel te blijven, en speciaal ter wille van al die Fransen die de laatste tijd Italiaans leren, heeft de vertaler de Italiaanse verzen naar Franse trant geconstrueerd. Bovendien is deze uitgave tweetalig: Frans links, Italiaans rechts. [Jaap Engelsman]

Vertaling in het Latijn door Carolus Alexandre

Jos Swiers heeft onderzoek gedaan naar de identiteit van de vertaler en kwam tot de bijzondere conclusie dat het een werk betreft van een twaalfjarige.

Het betreft Charles Alexandre, 1797-1870. Het lijkt erop dat Alexandre classicus was. Swiers vond enig werk van hem in de catalogus van de Library of Congres, waaronder een woordenboek Grieks-Frans uit 1858:

Dictionnaire français-grec; composé sur le plan des meilleurs dictionnaires francais-latine et enrichi d'une table des noms irréguliers, d'une table très-complète des verbes irréguliers ou difficiles et d'un vocabulaire des noms propres par M. M. Alexandre ... Parijs, Hachette, 1858, 1014 pag.

De jeugdige leeftijd van de vertaler wordt bevestigd door de Latijnse tekst op het titelblad. Daar wordt gemeld dat Alexandre 'Alumnus' is van een lyceum in Amiens, dat hij leerling is aan de Latijnse school, en dat hij 'Annos duodecim natus' is, twaalf jaar oud.

I must mention, that a subject of this nature is of necessity more piquant in a Catholic country than a Protestant. But the loss of poor Ver-Vert's purity of speech comes home to all Christendom ; and it is hard if the tender imaginations of the fair sex do not sympathize everywhere both with parrot and with nuns. When the poem appeared in France, it touched the fibres of the whole polite world, male and female. A minister of state made the author a present of a coffee-service in porcelain, on which was painted, in the most delicate colours, the whole history of the "immortal bird." If I had the leisure and the means of Mr. Rogers, nothing should hinder me from trying to out-do (in one respect) the delicacy of his publications, in versifying a subject so worthy of vellum and morocco. The paper should be as soft as the novices' lips, the register as rose-coloured ; every canto should have vignettes from the hand of Stothard ; and the binding should be green and gold, the colours of the hero.

And I here conclude this very tribute of long remembered gratitude towards the men who took such pains to drill my infant mind, and who formed with plastic power whatever good or valuable quality it may possess. And as for the friend of my youth, the accomplished Gresset, whose sincerity and kindness will be ever embalmed in my memory, I cannot shew my sense of his varied excellencies in a more substantial way than by making an effort—a feeble one, but the best I can command — to bring him before the English public in his most agreeable production, the best specimen of graceful and harmless humour in the literature of France. I shall upset Vert-Vert into English verse, for the use of the intelligent inhabitants of these islands ; though I much fear, that to transplant so delicate an exotic into this frigid climate may prove an unsuccessful experiment.

Francis Sylvester Mahony (1804-66), the creator of Father Prout and the Oliver Yorke of Fraser's Magazine, was, like Maginn, a native of Cork, and even more scholarly, accomplished, versatile, witty, and gifted with facile and felicitous utterance in prose and verse. He was educated at St Acheul, the Jesuit college at Amiens, and in Paris ; among the Jesuits he lived, as he said, in an atmosphere of Latin, and became a first-rate Latin scholar. He was admitted to the Society, taught in an Irish college, but for extraordinarily unconventional irregularities in a seminarist (including coursing and deep drinking) was pronounced to be no longer a Jesuit in 1830, and, obtaining with some difficulty priest's orders in 1832, officiated at Cork. But erelong he quarrelled with his bishop, and, settling in London, became one of the writers in Fraser's Magazine ; and during 1834-36 he contributed a series of papers, afterwards collected as The Reliques of Father Prout. From the gay tavern life of the ' Fraserians,' Mahony went abroad and travelled, 1837-41, in Hungary, Greece, and Asia Minor. He became in 1846 Roman correspondent of the Daily News, and his letters were in 1847 collected and published as Facts and Figures from Italy, by Don Jeremy Savonarola, Benedictine Monk. For the last eight years of his life—quite Bohemian, though latterly his wit became more caustic and his ways less sociable—he lived chiefly in Paris, and was the correspondent of the Globe, his letters forming the chief attraction of that journal. He died reconciled to the Church. A volume of Final Memorials of Father Prout, published in 1876 by Blanchard Jerrold, sufficiently illustrated Mahony's wonderful facility in Latin composition, his wit, quaint sayings, genial outbursts of sentiment, pathos, absurdity and satire jumbled together, and a certain reverence for religion among all his convivialities. James Hannay said of him : ' Mahoney's fun is essentially Irish—fanciful, playful, odd, irregular, and more grotesque than Northern fun. In one of his own phrases, he is an Irish potato, seasoned with Attic salt.'

Een zeldzame Nederlandse bewerking

Uitspanning en oefening voorzeker was het, dat de Heer Perk zich gezet heeft tot de berijmde vertaling van Gresset's geestig gedicht Vert-Vert. Hoe over het algemeen gelukkig en trouw dit uitvoerig gedicht hier in onze taal is overgebracht, moge het slot bewijzen. Men weet, het koddig episch dichtstuk bevat de lotgevallen van een papegaai, die, door nonnen opgekweekt, onder ruw volk verzeilt en daar ergerlijke taal aanleert. Na den dood van dien held des gedichts wordt hem door de nonnen een grafteeken opgericht:

Nu werd zijn graf bereid in schaâuw van mirteblaân.

Een mausoléum wijst het nog den wand'laar aan.

Teed're Artemisiaas tot eer van zijn gebeente

Graveerden met haar hand op 't marm'ren lijkgesteente,

 

Van bloemen rijk omkranst, dit schrift in goud gevat

(Wanneer men 't leest, wordt nog het oog van tranen nat):

Gij jonger zusters, die, aan de oogen

Der spijtige oudsten soms ontvlugt,

 

't Weerhouden hart en spraakvermogen

Geeft in dit eenzaam boschje lucht,

Beheerscht een oogenbik uw tongen,

Verneemt ons onverduurbaar wee,

 

Of, is 't te veel u afgedwongen,

Spreekt, spreekt dan, maar klaagt met ons meê

Een enkel woord verklaart u onze smarten:

Met Lorre rusten hier onze aller teed're harten.

 

Nogtans men heeft beweerd, en hiermeê breek ik af,

Dat 's vogels schim niet meer zou toeven in dat graf,

Zijn geest zich openbaart in kloosters en in kluizen,

En dat 't onsterflijk dier, door eeuwig zielsverhuizen,

 

Van non tot non altijd zijn aart en wetenschap

Zal overbrengen met zijn ziel en zijn gesnap.

Al ware het alleen om zulke verdienstelijke proeven zou hij de eer van het lidmaatschap der Maatschappij van Nederlandsche Letterkunde te Leiden verdiend hebben. Doch zij waren genoegzaam onbekend gebleven…

Meerheimb: Richard von M., der Sohn eines sächsischen Cavallerieofficiers, am 14. Januar 1825 zu Großenhain geboren, kam 1839 in das Cadettencorps und aus diesem 1842 als Portepeejunker zu dem in Dresden stehenden Leib-Infanterieregimente, wurde hier 1844 Officier, nahm 1849 an der Bekämpfung des Maiaufstandes, 1866 als Hauptmann und Compagniechef am Kriege gegen Preußen, in welchem er am 29. Juni im Treffen bei Gitschin schwer verwundet wurde, und 1870/71 als Oberstlieutenant im 4. Infanterieregimente Nr. 103 am deutsch-französischen Kriege Theil, schied nach Friedensschluß als Oberst aus dem Dienste, nahm seinen Wohnsitz, nachdem seit 1867 Kamenz und Bautzen seine Standorte gewesen waren, von neuem in Dresden und starb am 16. Januar 1896 in dem benachbarten Loschwitz.
M. bethätigte schon früh litterarische Neigungen. Zunächst in Uebersetzungen, wozu eine in späteren Jahren durch Reisen in das Ausland geförderte [283] Bekanntschaft mit fremden Sprachen ihn befähigte, durch Balladen und kleinere Erzählungen. Die erste von ihm veröffentlichte größere Arbeit war ein Heldengedicht, „Gulat und Tschadra“ (1848), in welchem er unter dem Pseudonym „Hugo von Meer“ die Tscherkessenkämpfe verherrlichte. Die meisten seiner Dichtungen knüpfen an die Verhältnisse und Beziehungen einzelner Gesellschaftskreise oder Menschenclassen an, so „Soldatenwelt“ (1857), „Poetenwelt“ (1859), „Frauenwelt“ (1862), „Fürstenwelt“ (1873), oder an Zeitereignisse und Tagesströmungen, so das antifranzösische „Nieder mit Babylon“ (1861) und „Trutz Dänemark und Kopenhagen“ (1863). Zu einem Heldenliede „Die Sachsen an der Moskwa“ (1853) gab das Andenken an seinen Vater, einen Mitkämpfer der Schlacht, den Anlaß; auf die nämliche Zeit beziehen sich die „Erinnerungen eines Veteranen aus Rußland“ (1860); für Thron und Thrones Ehre trat er ein in „Von Palermo bis Gaëta“ (1865), wovon der Ertrag den Grundstock der sächsischen Invalidenstiftung gebildet hat; von eigener Schmerzenszeit berichten „Kriegs- und Leidensfahrten eines Schwerverwundeten“ (1866); „Paul Kinishi“ (1865) ist die Umdichtung eines ungarischen Nationalepos; seine letzte Arbeit war „Eine Nacht auf dem Parkett“ (1896). Eine Kunstform, welcher M. in den späteren Jahren seines Lebens viel Aufmerksamkeit zuwandte, zu deren Pflege er eine eigene Gesellschaft mit eigenem Preßorgane begründete und der er zwei Schriften „Melodramenwelt“ (1886) und „Psychodramatisches Material“ (1888) widmete, hat viel Widerspruch hervorgerufen; es ist eine dramatische Handlung, in welcher nur eine Person redend auftritt. Für die A. D. B. schrieb M. eine Reihe meist militärischer Biographien von A bis K.
