The subject [of Vert-Vert] was used again in 1851 for a three-act ballet, composed by Ernest Deldevez and Jean Baptiste Tolbecque and choreographed by Joseph Mazilier. This provided a debut role at L'Opéra for Olimpia Priora as the heroine, Blanche, with Adeline Plunkett as Vert-Vert. The story held to the same outline, with an ample ball-room scene added, to provide an opportunity for a ballet-within-the-ballet, Le Fruit défendu, which Plunkett and Priora danced in the traditional costume of shepherd and shepherdess. Theophile Gautier wrote of Plunkett's appearance as Vert-Vert, "Impossible to dream of a little fellow daintier, more roguish, more arch, more prettily petulant than she".

Op de website van een Nederlandse boekhandelaar vinden we de volgende mededeling over deze uitvoering. De choreografie wordt daar, op gezag van Hans Uitman, toegeschreven aan Arthur Saint-Léon. HPM heeft daarvan geen bevestiging kunnen vinden. Het citaat luidt: 'Vert-vert is een ballet van Arthur Saint-Léon, dat in 1851 voor het eerst werd opgevoerd in de Parijse Opera (Hans Uitman).'

 

HPM is op zoek naar een handgekleurde lithografie Van Adeline Plunkett in haar Ver-Vertkostuum. Van deze prent is het volgende bekend:

door Lacauchie, Alexandre (A.L.), Melle Plunkett rôle de Vert-Vert, theaterprent, met de hand ingekleurde litho. Imp Jacomme & Cie, Paris, Paris, Maison Martinet, 41 r. Vivienne & 15 r. du Coq, z.j. (ca 1860), Galerie Dramatique / Theatre de l'opera, Nummer 605.

 

De Galerie Dramatique verscheen in de periode 1844-1871 bij Martinet-Hautecoeur te Parijs. De meeste illustraties zijn getekend en gelithografeerd door Alexandre Lacauchie, die werkzaam was in de periode 1830-1860. In totaal zijn er 993 portretten gepubliceerd van beroemde acteurs, zangers en dansers die zijn opgetreden in de theaters van Parijs. Deze uitgave was de voortzetting van de Petite Galerie Dramatique van graveur Aaron Martinet, die is verschenen in de periode 1796-1843 en 1637 gravures telde, afbeelding / prent / papier: 15,5 x 9 / 20 x 13 / 27,9 x 17,8 cm.

 

Adeline Plunkett is gekleed in een donkerblauwe wijde rok tot ver boven de knieën, afgezet met rode biezen en versieringen. Daaronder draagt ze een witte onderrok, die tot net onder de knieën reikt. Een strak lijfje in de kleuren van de overrok, waaronder een wit hemd met korte mouwen. Zeer laag décolleté. Kleding en kapsel versierd met rozen.

Émile Marcelin (1825-1887), pseudoniem van Émile Planat. Illustrator, karikaturist. Van 1850-1870 o.a. werkzaam voor L'illustration. Richtte daarna het blad La vie Parisienne op. De hier getoonde karikatuur van Marcelin is een gravure naar een tekening van Marcelin zelf.

Informatie over deze prent uit het Victoria & Albert Museum: Olimpia Priora was an Italian dancer who, at the age of 15, had considerable success in Paris. The print does not appear to show her in a particular role. By the end of the 1840s, the ballerina had evolved an iconic look which is still the popular image of the ballet dancer today - sleeked-down hair, pointed, low-necked bodice, or a laced bodice over a small blouse, and knee or calf-length bell-shaped skirt.

The print is part of the collection of dance prints amassed by Marie Rambert and her husband, Ashley Dukes in the first half of the 20th century. Eventually numbering 145 items, some of which had belonged to the ballerina Anna Pavlova, it was one of the first and most important
specialist collections in private hands.

Parijs, 31 mei 1817 – 6 november 1897.

Violist, componist, dirigent en muziekleraar. Werkte samen met Francois Sudre die experimenteerde met mogelijkheden om taal om te zetten naar muziek. Met een trio brachten ze uitvoeringen waarbij vragen uit het publiek per viool werden beantwoord. Ook militairen hadden hier wel oren naar om op die manier op het slagveld orders door te seinen per trompet. Maar wind en slecht weer gooiden roet in het eten. En zo stierf het experiment een stille dood. Voor zijn bijdragen als muziektheoreticus en vooral voor zijn bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van de moderne muzieknotatie ontving hij in 1874 het Légion d’honneur.

Mademoiselle Vibon in haar kostuum voor een rol in de balletuitvoering van Ver-Vert. Het is echter niet duidelijk of het de hier genoemde productie betreft of wel een van latere datum.

Mlle Vibon was a minor dancer at the Paris Opera in the 1850s. Vert-Vert, set in 18th century France, was choreographed by Joseph Mazilier.

It may be that Vibon played one of the pages, who seem to have been performed by girls. By the 1860s, most male roles in ballets in Paris and later in London were played by girls en travesti (dressed as men). This is an indication of the influence of the Romantic ballet, which had centered on the ballerina and pushed the male dancer into a supporting role.

By 1860, photography had become a viable commercial medium, and several of the prints in the series Les Danseuses de l’Opera seem to be copies of photographs. Maybe this was because most photographs were quite small and, of course, sepia toned; translated into lithographs, they could be larger and then hand coloured, making them more suitable for display.

Russische balletdanseres. Danste in een aantal balletten van de Franse choreograaf Mazilier, waaronder het ballet Vert-Vert. Daarin danste ze tezamen met Carlotta Grisi en Elssler.
